April Diary: Pirates & Schroeder

Ever since the coronavirus impacted our world, our lifestyles have changed majorly. Many of us are confined to our homes and forced to find ways to keep busy.

My days have been filled with school, writing, reading, exercise, true crime podcasts, and more reading.

In regards to writing news. . . I’ve finished a short story, and I’m currently working on a few writing projects–including plotting a crime novel. That’s all I can say for now, but more news to come.

Today, I thought I’d let you in on the entertainments keeping me busy during this time.

๐Ÿ“š LITERATURE ๐Ÿ“š

The Book Thief, Markus Zusak

After watching the movie version of this riveting novel, a couple of months, I picked up a copy and started reading it. I love it. Nazi Germany has always intrigued me and this novel happens to be set in that time period. The characters are spectacular and it possesses a very interesting narrator–Death. I’ll be reviewing this book in the near future, so stay tuned. ๐Ÿ˜‰

A Study in Scarlet, Sir Arthur Connon Doyle

I’ve always been obsessed with Sherlock. His brilliant mind and ability to observe and deduce fascinates me. And this novel–a classic–is no exception.

๐ŸŽญ ENTERTAINMENT ๐ŸŽญ

Pirates of the Caribbean #1

Ahh, where can I start?! I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this movie! Pirates! Damsels-in-distress! Witty lines! And Captain Jack Sparrow. . . his sass is amusing, savvy? This film quickly climbed my list of favorite movies. ๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ

Sherlock (TV Series)

Because of my admiration for Sherlock Holmes (see above), I decided to give the modern TV Series Sherlock a spin. I’ve finished the first season of it and I’m hooked. Intriguing and morbid are two words to explain it. Right up my alley. ๐Ÿ˜œ

Phantom of the Opera (Royal Albert Hall)

I discovered The Phantom of the Opera soundtrack awhile back and because of my love for musicals, the songs floated into my playlists. When I saw that Royal Albert Hall was providing a recording of the play for free–Coronavirus kindness–for 24 hours only, I snatched it up. The stunningly beautiful voices and mysterious story plot captivated me. It was a fantastic performance.

๐ŸŽต MUSIC ๐ŸŽต

My playlists ring with everything from Jazz to Musical soundtracks. Classical has been quite calming to listen to as well. As for wordy music. . . Avi Kaplan’s new album remains my monthly favorite.

โœจ CHARACTER SPOTLIGHT โœจ

Schroeder

Schroeder (Peanuts) - Wikipedia

Honestly, reading Peanuts comics is one of the only ways I’m surviving quarantine. Schroeder has always been my favorite Peanuts character; I love his dry humor and cool demeanor. And his interactions with Lucy have offered amusement for nearly a century. Perhaps it’s time people revisit these classics?

  1. Hello Ms. Rink!
Great to see what’s been on your to do list. I’ve just finished Magic for Marigold by L.M. Montgomery. Obviously Anne of Green Gables is better, but it was a fun read! I would definitely recommend it. Other than that, I have been doing a lot of crafting including cross-stitch, crochet, and drawing.
Can’t wait to read your next post. =)

  2. I’m really glad to know someone nice also enjoys true crime stories. I always feel a little sheepish about it. I have a movie channel called BritBox and it’s all British comedies dramas, and series and it’s wonderful- it keeps me hooked. I’ll say one thing about the covid– it keeps you focused in the moment.

  3. Ooh, my sister bought me The Book Thief for Christmas, and I haven’t gotten around to reading it yet. I’ve heard it’s amazing! I also love Pirates of the Caribbean #1! ๐Ÿ˜€

  4. Hello Abbi, Ok, my comments on some of your entries: 1. The Book Thief This is such an interesting and unusual movie. The girl who plays the main character was a gymnast and not an actor but tried acting because her brother was one. She was phenomenal we thought. Perhaps the most interesting/surprising development in the movie was about her relationship with her foster mother. I did not expect it to become a warm relationship but it thankfully did. What I didn’t appreciate at first was the extreme pressure (financial and more) this woman was in, explaining her coldness in the beginning. 2. A Study in Scarlet is not my favorite Sherlock Holmes but I love it. We read the stories and watch the BBC shows with Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke. Most of the stories are true enough to the Conan Doyle writing to satisfy me. I have heard of the modern series but haven’t tried them. 3. When I was in High School and we went to Disneyland, my absolutely favorite thing was the Pirates of the Caribbean.
On another note, today is my birthday and I am getting quite old but I am happy. It’s a very good day and I just finished a nice long phone visit with Adelaide. Aunt Mary

    • Ooh, I didn’t know that. That’s amazing!
YES! I love Sherlock Holmes. (:
      Ahh, that does sound fun!
      Happy Belated Birthday, Aunt Mary!
