Our Story is HIStory

Books and stories are amazing things! You get transported to a different world and setting and get to observe the story with eagerness. But did you know that you are part of a story crafted by the supreme storyteller, plotter, and planner? Even now the author of your story is planning what lies ahead. You are character with a purpose! A hero of your own story.

GOD AS AN AUTHOR

Our life is a story written by an intelligent and creative author.  He takes pleasure in writing and plotting the purposeful plan He has for us. The story that takes time and isn’t finished yet.

God’s name in Exodus 3, Yahweh,  is likely the causative form of the Hebrew verb hayah, “to be.” This is an interesting piece of information because “to be” in the causative form would be translated “I cause to exist.” God is the causer of all things, the creator. By His words, things exist. Human storytellers use words and paper to relate their stories, but God uses space and time.

“All the world’s a stage/and all the men and women merely players.”

William Shakespeare

God the author spent time crafting each of our unique personalities. He knew what our future would be thousands of years before we were born. We are His characters, heroes of the faith!

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

Jeremiah 29:11 ESV

He has planted a hope and a future in our hearts. We navigate through stormy seas with the help of our Creator.

GOD AS A CREATOR

God is an author and an author is a creator. Not only does the story He wrote beat to the tune of His heart, but He also enters it. The Fall to the readers may seem a horrible and should-not-have-happened part of the story… but the Creator knows the reason behind it.

He has plot twists He’s just dying to throw in. And there was one very special plot twist that has already happened. God—in the flesh–entered the world to die for our sins. Because of this, we can have a perfect relationship with Him.

“Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of.”

Psalms 139:16 NIV

God created us! Scripture states that we are in His book! Isn’t that awesome? He remembers us as a reader remembers their favorite character. We are surely precious in His sight.

Just like how authors have an existence apart from their stories, so does God. If the world had never come into being, God would still exist. God stays the same whether we exist or not. He’s unchanging and self-sufficient. We have no existence apart from Him and therefore, He causes all things.

“I Am” emphasizes God-as-God; Yahweh emphasizes God-as-Author.”

HOW GOD AS AN AUTHOR IMPACTS STORY-TELLING

Stories are God-breathed.

God loves stories as much as we do! And when we create them for His glory, He loves them even more. That being said, Christian writers have some advantages that secular writers don’t.

We have a biblical view and perspective on the world. The Bible gives us directions and pointers on how a Christian living for Christ acts. There are so many powerful stories and captivating verses in the bible that can inspire your stories.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Proverbs 3:5-6

We have God who—if we submit to Him—will guide our pen in the way it should go. He is our ultimate source of consultation and He sparks the ideas in our minds.

“Life is like a library owned by the author. In it are a few books which he wrote himself, but most of them were written for him.”

Harry Emerson Fosdick

God is an author and a creator! We are part of His story and our purpose for life is written on our hearts.  He added plot twists including the death and resurrection of His son, Jesus. And He has many more in mind. Our Story is History and as much as I love the first book, I’m looking forward to the sequel.

“Since all the world is but a story, it were well for thee to buy the more enduring story rather than the story that is less enduring.”

Saint Columbia

  1. Hello Abbi, I enjoyed reading your post about History and the I AM. It was very well written. A favorite Bible verse that came to mind is from John 8:58 where Jesus says, “Before Abraham was, I AM”. Great Aunt Mary

  2. Abbi, Your writing is very insightful and thought provoking. Our lives are made up of many chapters. May we all look to God for direction and “Finish Well”

  3. Good stuff Abbi ! Many people look hard to find their purpose. You are telling us to find it in him,so true. Thanks for reminding us to remember God is writting our story in a book and how we live does matter.

  4. I so enjoy your blog. I notice how cleverly you “hook” the reader into reading what you have to say with the very first sentence! I too believe that God wants us to turn to Him so that He can help us write our story. Even though I was a little late I’m glad that I have done just that. How exciting! I know the years will reveal a beautiful story written for you.
